GirlKIND recently celebrated their 3rd annual “Every Girl Matters Day,” in Abbotsford at The Reach Gallery Museum this past Sunday Oct 11, 2015. The day was officially proclaimed through the BC Legislature and Minister De Jong was on hand to mark the occasion and celebrate with the community. The event was well attended especially by many middle and high school students. Many who attended inspired by the day overall and looking forward to getting involved with making a difference in their communities. The keynote speaker was Abbotsford’s first South Asian woman elected to City Council: Kelly Chahal. She shared her inspiring journey of her life and her motivations to pursue education and how she never quit.
The community art project was led by The Reach and it allowed individuals to create their own pieces of art which they could take home. This year, individuals created, “Mason jar lanterns,” inspired by influential feminists. They decorated their own lantern using paint, stickers, found objects and feminist quotes. The idea was to keep a candle burning in the lanterns to serve as a reminder that Every Girl Matters.
